In short
YouTube Shorts length is capped at 3 minutes (180 seconds). Any square or vertical video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 that runs 3 minutes or less is treated as a Short. Before that date the limit was 60 seconds, which is why a lot of advice online is still out of date. The maximum is only half the answer, though. The better question is how long your Short should be, and how fast it should move. This guide covers the official rules, a practical length for each kind of Short, and what we measured when we studied the editing pace of 54 viral Shorts.
- The YouTube Shorts maximum length is 3 minutes, for square (1:1) or vertical (9:16) videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024.
- A horizontal video is never a Short, whatever its length. It is published as a regular video.
- Shorts over 1 minute with an active copyright claim are blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved. Under 1 minute, nothing changes.
- Most songs from YouTube's library can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short; some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
- Length matters less than pace: in our study of 54 viral Shorts the median shot lasted 4.7 seconds and the first cut came at about 1.9 seconds.
- Start at 20 to 45 seconds for most faceless Shorts and only go longer when the story needs it.

Summarize this article
YouTube Shorts length is capped at 3 minutes (180 seconds). Any square or vertical video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 that runs 3 minutes or less is treated as a Short. Before that date the limit was 60 seconds, which is why a lot of advice online is still out of date.
The maximum is only half the answer, though. The better question is how long your Short should be, and how fast it should move. This guide covers the official rules, a practical length for each kind of Short, and what we measured when we studied the editing pace of 54 viral Shorts.
How long can YouTube Shorts be?
| Rule | What YouTube allows |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | 3 minutes (180 seconds) |
| Minimum length | No official minimum; a few seconds works |
| Aspect ratio | Vertical (9:16) or square (1:1) |
| Recommended resolution | 1080 × 1920 pixels |
| Upload date rule | 3-minute Shorts apply to uploads on or after October 15, 2024 |
| Music from the library | Usually up to 90 seconds per Short |
| Copyright claims | Shorts over 1 minute with an active claim are blocked |
The source for these rules is YouTube's own help page on three-minute Shorts. Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 keep the status they had: a 2-minute vertical video from early 2024 stays a long-form video.
Do vertical videos over 3 minutes become Shorts?
No. A vertical video longer than 180 seconds is published as a regular YouTube video. It still plays fine on mobile, but it does not appear in the Shorts feed.
Can a horizontal video be a Short?
No. A 16:9 video is a regular upload at any length. If you want to reuse horizontal footage, reframe it to 9:16 first and keep text inside the YouTube Shorts safe zone so the buttons on the right and the title at the bottom do not cover it.
What changed when Shorts went to 3 minutes
The move from 60 seconds to 3 minutes did not change what works. It changed what is allowed.
Two side effects matter in practice:
- Copyright is stricter on longer Shorts. Under 60 seconds, a claimed Short behaves as before. Over 60 seconds, any active claim blocks the Short until it is resolved. If you use music or clips you do not own, staying under a minute is the safer choice.
- Music has its own cap. Most library tracks stop at 90 seconds, so a 3-minute Short needs either your own audio or a voiceover for the rest.
What is the best length for YouTube Shorts?
There is no single best length. There is a best length for the job the Short has to do. These are the ranges we use for faceless Shorts:
| Kind of Short | Good length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One fact, one twist | 15 to 25 seconds | One idea, watched twice; replays help |
| List of 3 to 5 items | 30 to 45 seconds | About 8 seconds per item plus the hook |
| Story or mystery | 45 to 90 seconds | Needs setup, turn and payoff |
| Explainer or how-to | 30 to 60 seconds | One problem, one answer, one example |
| Product demo or ad | 15 to 30 seconds | Show the product working before the viewer swipes |
| Mini-episode in a series | 60 to 180 seconds | Viewers who chose the series stay longer |
The rule behind the table: cut everything that does not move the viewer to the next line. A 40-second Short that people finish beats a 2-minute Short that loses half its viewers at second 8.
If you are unsure, start at 30 seconds. It is long enough for a hook, three beats and a payoff, and short enough to replay.
Pacing matters more than length
Length gets the attention, but pace decides whether people keep watching. To put numbers on it we measured 54 viral YouTube Shorts from our inspiration library, frame by frame. The full method is in our viral Shorts pacing study.
| What we measured | Result |
|---|---|
| Median shot length | 4.7 seconds |
| Shot length in the fastest quarter of videos | 2.8 seconds or less |
| Time to the first cut | About 1.9 seconds |
| Videos with at least one cut | 47 of 54 (87%) |
What that means for your edit:
- Change the picture within the first 2 seconds. The opening shot of a viral Short rarely runs longer.
- Cut or reframe every 3 to 5 seconds. A tighter crop of the same clip counts as a cut for the viewer.
- Put cuts on pauses in the voice, so the picture and the sentence move together.
- A longer Short needs the same pace, not a slower one. Three minutes at a 12-second shot length feels like a slideshow.
Most AI video tools hold one image for a whole sentence of narration, which is about 12 seconds. That is more than twice as long as a typical viral shot. When we built the Craft edit style in Viibeo, we made it reframe each scene about every 3 seconds on voice pauses, with the first cut at 1.4 seconds.
How to pick the length before you write
- Write the payoff first. What does the viewer get at the end: a fact, an answer, a reveal?
- Count the beats. One beat is one new idea or image. Most Shorts need three to five.
- Give each beat 6 to 10 seconds of voice. That sets your length: 4 beats is roughly 30 to 40 seconds.
- Read the script out loud. Spoken English runs about 150 words a minute, so 75 words is a 30-second Short.
- Cut the first sentence. It is almost always setup the viewer does not need.
For help with the opening line, the TikTok hook generator works just as well for Shorts, and the YouTube Shorts script generator drafts a full script at the length you pick.
YouTube Shorts length compared with TikTok and Reels
| Platform | Maximum length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | 3 minutes | Square or vertical only |
| Instagram Reels | 3 minutes for Reels | Longer uploads post as regular videos |
| TikTok | Longer uploads allowed | Limits depend on account and upload method |
If you post the same video everywhere, 3 minutes is the practical ceiling, and 30 to 60 seconds is the range that works on all three. Our comparison of TikTok vs Reels vs Shorts covers the differences beyond length.
How Viibeo handles Shorts length
When you create a video in Viibeo, you pick 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 3 minutes. The script is written to that length, the voiceover is timed to it, and the visuals change on the voice pauses so the pace stays fast even on longer Shorts. Captions and titles are kept inside the Shorts safe zone.
On the Starter plan and above, Autopilot can post the finished Short to YouTube on a schedule. You can also make your first video free and download it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can YouTube Shorts be in 2026?
Up to 3 minutes (180 seconds). The video must be square or vertical and uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Longer vertical videos are published as regular YouTube videos.
Is the YouTube Shorts limit 60 seconds or 3 minutes?
3 minutes. The 60-second limit applied to uploads before October 15, 2024. Videos uploaded before that date keep their original status.
What is the best length for a YouTube Short?
For most faceless Shorts, 20 to 45 seconds. Single facts work at 15 to 25 seconds, stories at 45 to 90 seconds, and episodes in a series can use the full 3 minutes.
Do longer YouTube Shorts get more views?
Not by themselves. A longer Short only helps if people keep watching. Pace matters more: in our study of 54 viral Shorts the median shot lasted 4.7 seconds.
Why was my 3-minute Short blocked?
YouTube blocks Shorts over 1 minute that have an active copyright claim. Remove the claimed music or clip, or resolve the claim, and the Short becomes playable again. Your channel is not penalized.
How long can music play in a YouTube Short?
Most songs from YouTube's library can be used for up to 90 seconds. Some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
What size should a YouTube Short be?
1080 × 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio. Keep text away from the bottom 660 pixels and the right 190 pixels, where YouTube shows the title and buttons.
